Oh what a long time it’s been and I apologise for the delay in letting in you know how I have been going with the new house and all the renovations. We moved on December the 16th, despite inches of snow, treacherous road conditions and lack of floor boards in the new house. Yes I wouldn’t go there again, but eventually we unpacked and despite a small breakdown on Christmas Eve (the house was in about 4 inches of dust from re-plastering), we survived. Now so many months on, we have had the house re-wired, re-plastered, re-plumbed and the floor boards are back down! I am getting myself organised and yes – back on-line, so I can keep you posted with all the little home made projects and vintage finds as I start to finish each room. For now though – a few photos of work done so far and the reason we moved – bigger garden and those countryside views.

The perfect pair of long wooden size 4 needles. I was just on my way to pick up a new bird table when down a side street I spotted a charity junk shop and as ever had to have a nose. In a big jar of needles, these lovely wooden ones looked brand new and were 50p. I’d been looking for some longer size 4 needles for a while. I started a blanket for my friends cat with my longest needles that are 6, and quickly learned why 4dk wool is to be used with size 4 needles – the holes in my stitches were enormous! I unravelled the whole thing and have learned my lesson. Will try again with the size 4′s and let you know how I get on.

Iv’e been trying to learn how to knit for about three years now, but I think Iv’e finally got the hang of by knitting clothes and blankets for my little ones doll. The blanket started off with very dodgy looking stitches, but by the time I got to the end, I’d got the hang of it and found it was looking more even. . I finished it off with a crochet edge that I found in my knitting techniques book.
To teach myself increase and decrease, I had a go at the free knitting pattern from http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/home/free-baby-bootie-knitting-patterns2.htm This pattern shows you how to knit these beautiful Mary Jane booties. It’s not too hard for a beginner and was a good introduction to increasing and decreasing, although I did have to ask my aunty to help me with this! My daughter is very happy with them as she can slip them on to her doll herself. Ones slightly bigger than the other though! More practice needed I think.
I’ve just started a yellow cat for my daughters Christmas stocking, and then I’m going to have a go at a knitted robot for my Son’s Christmas stocking. Will keep you posted how I get on!

House update! We have officially had the offer accepted on THE house that I keep going on about. Praying it will all go through without a hitch, can’t wait for – A greenhouse!, Hubby have his own garage to potter in, big kids room with space for the toys (so many toys!), and a kitchen with a nice big country table in. Can wait for – did I mention it needs re-wiring, plumbing, new windows, etc etc! Gosh am I up to this project? Or is hubby being as I will be no use at all for any of that stuff?
What I can be a use for is finding all those fantastic vintage and second-hand things to fill it up. Now my mission to shun the high street for all things vintage and hand-made really starts. I have already brought a pine, kingsize bed on ebay for £1.04. The best part is when we went to pick it up from a little village in Derbyshire, we found a quirky little antiques shop with the sweetest pink ceramic ceiling pendant I have ever seen. (Hubby disagrees, thinks it looks like a fruit bowl). However, I’m not sure he get the vintage look! unfortunately the shop was closed for the weekend, but hopefully I will get chance to pop back soon. Will post pics soon of any great finds and pics of the house too. Talk about vintage, it hasn’t been touched for twenty-five years!
I am also starting a cross stitch cushion and need to get some material for curtains. Will keep you posted.

I found the best little vintage fair in the backstreets of Southwold on the Suffolk coast. I stumbled upon it by accident and found a wonderous collection of vintage and home-made gems for the home and garden. Had I more room in the car, I would have snapped up several old deck chairs, a brilliant chalk board and an enormous picnic basket! However with bored family in tow (you know what that’s like), I came away with this gorgeous blue glass dressing table set. I’m not usually a huge fan of blue, but I just can’t resist coloured glass and decided it would look fab on a white-painted dressing table in THE house. (Yes im getting closer to maybe putting an offer in for that house I keep going on about).
I think there’s a couple of stoppers missing, but at £6 I still think it’s a bargain. I think it might be 1960′s but I’m not sure. Anyone got any ideas?

Well its been a few weeks now since I vowed to go organic. I have been having a weekly food delivery from Riverford Organic of a mini veg box, fruit bag, milk, butter, yoghurt, cheese, chocolate and apple juice. I have also tried several other organic products from them such as meat, veggie burgers, blackcurrant squash, mayonnaise and pasta.
So how has it been? Well, a huge unexpected plus is the taste. I don’t know if it’s because there’s no chemicals or because it is seasonal, but I honestly say I have never tasted better fruit and veg. The apples are incredible and the tomatoes are like the ones you get in France or Italy. I have found this has made cooking so much easier because I do not have to work hard to get make a good sauce or tasty veg. Also they supply really useful recipes in every box so that I don’t run out of ideas of how to cook the veg they have put in. Some of my husbands favorites have been runner bean ratatoullie, and poor mans potatoes, (potatoes cooked with peppers and garlic – a great alternative to my usual baked or boiled).
On the downside though, I have found it a bit of culture shock from supermarket organic veg that is usually washed, packaged and generally perfect looking. I really don’t mind washing the dirt from the potatoes and carrots (I remember all veg looking like that when I was young), but I wasn’t quite prepared for some of the wildlife that has tagged along! Yes I know I’m supposed to be doing this to help the little guys but I wasn’t expecting a personal thankyou. I’ve had a few bugs on the brocoli , the salad comes with teeth marks, and I’ve had a few surprises on the cabbages such as a caterpillar and a worm! I won’t pretend that it’s not going to take some getting used to, although what better proof that the produce is pesticide free! and therefore no toxic chemicals for my families bodies. Plus my daughter is always absolutely delighted. I suppose it’s no different to when I’m digging up potatoes in my garden and putting the worms back!
Organic weekly delivery – my good and bad list
Best bits:
* Riverford butter – no words can do it justice, toast has been transformed in our house, could never go back to other butter now.
* Riverford milk – as above, even the skimmed has a lovely flavour better than other organic milks.
* The potatoes – taste so good, make any meal ten times better.
* The meat – seems pricey but you get really big portions, I order lots, freeze half, then use a pack for two meals. Ends up costing a couple of quid a meal and feel happy that the animals are extremely well looked after and fed.
* The diversity – we have different variety apples, potatoes etc each week, odd-looking cucumbers, which ever salad leaves are in season etc. I don’t think I ever had a different cucumber delivered from my supermarket – it was all the same.
* The quality and size of the food – amazing quality – look at the size of the garlic! Has improved my cooking no end.
* Seasonal – I don’t even have to think about what’s in season as they just don’t stock it. It feels like I’m living more in tune with the planet already (is that really cheesy!).
The not so good bits:
* My husband and kids didn’t enjoy the organic squash at all. But the apple juice was a big hit. I never used to think about juice when I was buying organic from a supermarket, but of course if the fruit isn’t organic it’s probably been sprayed.
* The farmhouse cheddar – big no from the family. The husband said it tasted like a farm. But if you like the taste of farmhouse cheese it would probably be a winner.
* Sometimes I just change the order to the staple veg (easily done). I do get fed up of eating too much veg, there’s only so much cabbage you want in a week! I prefer more salads I think, but it is easy to change the order.
All in all though I would really recommend trying a local organic delivery, it’s so nice to think the food we are buying is helping out the wildlife, the lives of the farm animals and the countryside and rivers that are polluted with pesticides. Plus the garlic is massive!

Arhhh! I woke up a few days ago to find that my lovely tomato plants were covered in blight. luckily I salvaged most of the fruits, but had a huge excess of bright green tomatoes. So I tried a green tomato chutney for the first time, and I’ve been thrilled with the results. It was a bit of an effort cutting up all the fruit and veg, but it was all worth it as we have had the best sandwiches and cheese on toast that we have ever had,
I found a great recipe in my Alys Fowler’s Edible Garden book, but didn’t have a lot of the ingredients to hand. However it turned out pretty well anyway. Warning – it is addictive!
I used: About a kilogram of green tomatoes, 4 small red onions, 5 apples, 400g of sugar (I used ordinary granulated but the original recipe is brown) 6 cloves of garlic, 400ml of white wine vinegar (the recipe says malt or red but I didn’t have any), and 2 tsp salt and 3tsp dried ginger (didn’t have fresh).
Chop everything up, put in a large pan and heat gently until blended together and fairly thick. I sterilised my jars in the oven for ten minutes and then poured in the mixture.
I genuinely think this is the best chutney you will ever try, however, I don’t how much is owed to the incredible organic local apples that Riverford have been sending me in my weekly veg box. I will update soon on how it’s going with my new Organic lifestyle! Theres been good and bad!
